Jacqueline Lemaître is an artist from Cherbourg and occupies an unique place in the world of watercolours. Over the last decade she has won a number of awards in national and international
exhibitions and in 2010, she was awarded the Grand Prix de Prestige for watercolours at the International Salon Arts-Inter in Chambéry.
Escapism within arm's reach
Largely inspired by the sea, Jacqueline Lemaître enjoys letting her mind sail open waters. Everything she paints seems to be immersed in light and wind. Her work is a constant invitation to leave
all heaviness behind.
Jacqueline Lemaître first navigated oil-painting before taking up watercolours and pastels, mediums which, she confirms, really allowed to "find her style", her personal stamp. Fairly close
to abstraction in terms of her conception of construction, J. Lemaître structures her subjects around great unifying lines that are very often reminiscent of masts and rigging.
Even if it is easy to see what themes her work refers to – yachts are practically omnipresent – to seek a copy of reality in what she paints would be to misinterpret it. First and foremost,
J. Lemaître dreams only of escaping, of letting her mind navigate freely, thereby appealing to the observer's imagination. (…)
